The apostille process is a streamlined way to verify documents internationally, ensuring that they are accepted and legally recognized in other participating countries. An apostille is a certification used to authenticate documents for use in countries that are part of the Hague Convention of 1961. It verifies the authenticity of the signature, the capacity in which the person signing the document acted, and, where appropriate, the identity of the seal or stamp the document bears.
Here’s how it works:
1. Purpose: An apostille is required for official documents, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, powers of attorney, or business documents, that need to be recognized in a foreign country.
2. Process: To obtain an apostille, the document must first be notarized or certified by an appropriate public official. Then, it is submitted to the designated authority in the country where the document was issued (e.g., Secretary of State in the U.S.) for the apostille certification.
3. Recognition: Once apostilled, the document is recognized as authentic in all countries that are members of the Hague Convention, without the need for further legalization by embassies or consulates.
